ARB 4x4 Accessories is bringing racing technology to your adventures. The OME BP-51 shock absorbers feature revolutionary, patent-pending technology developed by the Old Man Emu engineers to deliver unparalleled on and off road performance. This application of OME BP-51 High Performance Bypass Shock Absorbers has been engineered specifically for the Toyota 4Runner model years 2010+.
The resulting height gain for the 4Runner, when paired with the appropriate rear coils, will be 2.5 to 3 inches of lift. Rear shock absorbers have been tuned to match the existing range of rear Old Man Emu springs and recommended compression and rebound settings can be found in the supplied fitting instructions for the various spring options available. The fitting instructions also include detailed information for correct installation of the shock absorber and reservoir placement.
BP-51 (Bypass 51mm Diameter Bore) Shock Absorbers: The new BP-51 range of high performance, bypass shock absorbers is the result of an exhaustive development process aimed at delivering the ultimate in both comfort and control. Designed, developed and tested entirely in-house by ARB’s team of Old Man Emu ride engineers, BP-51 shock absorbers are vehicle specific and utilize existing mounting locations to provide easy installation without the need for additional vehicle modification. Unlike most other adjustable shock absorbers, which provide adjustment for compression only, the BP-51 range allows on vehicle, independent adjust-ability of both rebound and compression to offer class leading ride customization that can be tailored to individual vehicle or trip requirements.
The shocks have two dials on the shock bodies that are used to separately adjust the compression and rebound dampening. These dials are turned with special spanner wrenches that are included in the fitting kits. The preload adjustment on the coil spring needs to be done with the coil compressed so there is no load on the spanner nut. Spring preload adjustments can be done in your existing spring compressor. All the hardware for mounting the shock reservoirs is included.

Whether you’re travelling on harsh Outback roads, using your vehicle for competition purposes or towing a camper trailer, the importance of a fully integrated 4×4 suspension system is paramount.
Designed for superior performance across all terrain, an Old Man Emu suspension upgrade by ARB will provide noticeable improvements to a vehicle’s performance, including load carrying capacity and control characteristics.
Australia’s leading 4×4 suspension brand takes into account your individual requirements with specialist engineers spending hundreds of man hours testing and modifying various combinations in the demanding Australian Outback so you can find the most suitable solution for your needs.
All BP-51 shock absorbers are manufactured in-house by ARB. In order to achieve this, significant investment has been made in state of the art machining and hard anodising equipment, allowing ARB total control of the process to ensure the highest possible quality.
BP-51 shock absorber bodies are manufactured using aircraft grade (6061) anodised aluminium to dissipate heat more efficiently than steel or alloy steel and provide superior corrosion resistance.
ARB and Old Man Emu’s commitment to providing the most comprehensive range on the market has resulted in an extensive selection of quality products. From OME shocks to OME suspension kits, all of our products are backed by a minimum 3 years or 60,000km (whichever comes first) warranty and aftersales service that is unmatched by any other suspension company.
In addition to the velocity sensitive damping used in most shock absorbers, where the faster the piston moves, the higher the level of damping is generated, BP-51 shock absorbers also generate damping dependent on the position of the piston within the shock absorber’s body via their bypass design.
While most shock absorbers only generate damping based on fluid flowing through the piston, the BP-51 offers an alternative path from one chamber to the other, around the piston in the form of bypass passages. Some fluid flows through the piston and some fluid bypasses around the piston in the bypass passages.
This results in an ability for the shock absorber to provide the best of both worlds, with a comfortable and compliant ride during normal driving and a more controlled ride over more challenging terrain. With greater levels of damping generated at each end of the stroke, the piston slows as it approaches full compression and extension, preventing harsh topping out against the bump stop and allowing larger bumps and corrugations to be absorbed more easily.
